Sunflower by MonicaMarinho Sunflower by MonicaMarinho
For ~amauzume21

Redesign of Sunflower, a Disney black centaur girl from Fantasia's Pastoral Symphony ([link]). In the original edition, Sunflower and other 2 girls were depicted as servants who attended to the other (white) maids needs. Recently, these characters were removed from the piece due to their racist symbolism.

I think the Pastoral Symphony is still a beautiful piece and must be thought in the time it was created. Never the less, Sunflower deserved a chance to be "redesigned" not as a servant but as any of the other maids, so here she is. :)

Hope you like her!

I am so glad to see this character get the treatment she's deserved since 1940. =D

I hated seeing the servant centaurs, although I wouldn't have cared whether they took them out or not. Like previous commenters, I think those images should be left alone and learned from. Anyways, I did always find the zebra girls really very pretty :) I love your redesign, she's beautiful, great shading, the water, and all the highlights in her shawl, face, flowers, everything. Just amazing :D (Big Grin)

Lovely!

They took her out because she was an attendant but what about the black zebra centaur girls who were Bacchus/Dionysus's attendants? Why didn't they cut those? I swear, people are too f'ing sensitive these days.

I agree with you there. And wouldn't it been more racist if there never were any black cartoon characters?

Exactly! Just because something is offensive doesn't mean it should be nixed. We must learn from history or we are doomed to repeat it!

Wow I really like the idea behind this. I grew up watching the revamped version, so when I first saw Sunflower, I was really upset and disappointed. Its nice seeing someone take this and fix it.

that was one of my favorite pieces in it as well. I still have the original fantasia (along with all the other original Disney movies that have been edited...) and it is nice to see I am not the only one who enjoys them

Stunning! It's really interesting to read about the history of this character. I have an older version of the VHS release where a bush - yes a BUSH - mysteriously slides across the bottom of the screen at one point, masking Sunflower from view. Later releases simply cropped the scene even further to hide her entirely. Good to see her all grown up and happy, she deserves it!!

You people can think this freak-show is "idyllic" all night but this freak will just poop everywhere without an iota thought. Excreting as it walks by and urinating all over itself. Yeah real pretty.

^ And here, ladies and gentlemen, we have for your edification a specimen of the Common Troll, *Stultus interretiaris*.

Note the exceptionally large mouth, coupled with a microscopic excuse for a cranium. Scans reveal, in fact, that the cavity is almost solid bone; in fact, the few nerve endings that just barely serve for a brain are mostly concentrated in the pubic region - possibly as compensation for the shriveled and inadequate reproductive organs.

Its natural habitat is subterranean - usually an annex of its parents' den, where it feeds on carrion rejected by most other scavengers.

Having no imagination, it inevitably takes offense at any sign of that faculty in other species: hence it distills its natural supply of bile into what it believes to be a potent venom. However, chemical analysis has determined this toxin to be quite ineffective - more a mere annoyance than anything else.

In conclusion, this species is fairly harmless, and is best dealt with by being ignored.

Thank you. 7@=e

You are defending a mythical creature which speaks for itself. I am choosing to circumvent your fulminating tirade due to the fact that you have poorly characterized me. Your view off imagination is partially warped. The reason you think (I assume) that I am a troll is because you find it impalpable that someone would criticize the horse woman.

There is always a silver-lining. I did not know what annex means. Now I do.

Sadly, the sort of imagery you see in that piece was around for a long time, and tidbits still linger on. Two good movies to watch for this are Bamboozled, by Spike Lee, and CSA.

Bamboozled is about a black network exec who pitches a racist show in the hopes that they'll see how bad it is and let him pitch real shows. Only it's a hideous success and terrible things follow. It ends with a big montage showing some of the horrid stuff they used to have in cartoons and movies. As a movie buff, putting up with such images is one of the worst things about watching old movies, because they so often appear.

CSA is a mockumentary about the "Confederated States of America", an alternate world where the confederacy won and took over and now slavery is an institution. Average people own slaves, Canada became the origin for things like jazz and rock and much else artistic, the US took over South America...

Interspersed through the movie are fake ads. All of them are outrageous, but what's sad is how many of them are, as shown at the end of the movie, based on REAL products and ad campaigns that existed (and in some cases still do in altered form). Wiki finally has a decent article up about it: [link]

At any rate, it's beautiful to see you taking something that was so rooted in ignorance and transforming it so.

I remember doing some research for a paper about adding more colored and ethic characters into the world of video games and movies. And I remember stumbling across the original, unedited version of this character. I thought it was racist and after doing a bit more digging I saw it was. I still think Disney is racist though because it took us until late 2000s to get The Princess and The Frog's Tiana.

Regardless though, I still love Fantasia and how the animation was drawn to sync perfectly with the music they chose. Your redesign of this lovely character though is so beautiful. It's nice to see this character reborn.:la:
